Together, these risks affect both the coverage drivers need and the premiums insurers charge.

Florida’s basic registration requirements are relatively low. Most owners of registered four-wheel vehicles must carry at least $10,000 in Personal Injury Protection and $10,000 in Property Damage Liability. Although those limits can satisfy the basic registration requirement, they may leave a driver responsible for substantial costs after a serious accident. Review the official Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles insurance requirements.

For example, $10,000 in Property Damage Liability may not be enough if an insured driver totals a newer SUV, damages several vehicles or strikes a building, traffic signal or utility pole. Likewise, Florida’s minimum PIP limit can be exhausted quickly when an injured person needs emergency care, diagnostic testing and follow-up treatment.

Florida’s auto insurance market has recently shown signs of rate moderation. However, statewide averages do not mean every policyholder will receive a reduction. Individual premiums still depend on the insurer, drivers, vehicles, location, coverage and claims history. However, the appropriate policy structure depends on the vehicle, drivers, ownership arrangement and how the vehicle is used.

Florida Residents With Registered Vehicles

Before registering a four-wheel vehicle in Florida, an owner generally must show proof of at least $10,000 in Personal Injury Protection and $10,000 in Property Damage Liability. The required coverage must remain active while the Florida registration is active.

New Florida Residents

A driver moving to Florida should coordinate:

The Florida auto insurance effective date

Vehicle title and registration

A Florida driver license

Cancellation of the former-state policy

Lender or lessor notification

Household-driver disclosure

The new garaging address

Do not cancel the former policy until the Florida policy is confirmed and active. Parents should contact their agent when a child receives a learner’s permit, becomes licensed, regularly uses a household vehicle, purchases a vehicle, leaves for college or starts delivery or rideshare work.

Carrier rules vary. Most lenders and lessors require collision, comprehensive, specified deductibles, continuous coverage and accurate lienholder or lessor information.

Owners of Paid-Off Vehicles

Paying off a vehicle removes the lender’s requirements. Nevertheless, it does not automatically mean collision and comprehensive coverage should be dropped. Vehicle damage may involve collision, Property Damage Liability, comprehensive or another driver’s liability coverage.

Property Damage Liability

Property Damage Liability pays for covered property damage caused by the insured or another covered driver. Examples include damage to another vehicle, a building, fence, mailbox, utility pole, guardrail, traffic signal or landscaping.

Why $10,000 May Not Be Enough

If a driver causes $26,000 in vehicle damage, $14,000 in traffic-signal damage and $5,000 in barrier damage, the total is $45,000. A $10,000 Property Damage Liability limit could leave a $35,000 uninsured balance.

Bodily Injury Liability

Bodily Injury Liability can pay covered damages when an insured driver is legally responsible for injuring another person. Potential damages may include medical expenses, lost income, future care, disability, pain and suffering, legal defense, settlements or judgments.

Although Bodily Injury Liability is not universally required merely to register every private passenger vehicle in Florida, financial-responsibility requirements can apply after certain crashes, violations or convictions.

Households with substantial assets or higher liability exposures should coordinate auto limits with Florida umbrella insurance.

Split Limits

Bodily Injury Liability is often shown as two numbers, such as $100,000 per person and $300,000 per accident. A 100/300 policy generally provides no more than $100,000 for one person, subject to a $300,000 total maximum for all covered bodily injuries arising from the accident.

Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Coverage

Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage can protect covered people when they suffer bodily injury caused by a driver who has no Bodily Injury Liability insurance, insufficient limits or leaves the scene.

Florida insurers offering Bodily Injury Liability generally must offer Uninsured Motorist coverage. However, the applicant may reject it or select lower limits using the required form.

PIP Compared With Uninsured Motorist Coverage

PIP

Uninsured Motorist

Pays specified first-party benefits

Addresses covered bodily injury caused by an uninsured or underinsured driver

Generally limited to $10,000

May be purchased at higher limits

Subject to statutory percentages and restrictions

Can address damages beyond basic PIP benefits, subject to the policy

Required for applicable registered vehicles

Optional, but generally must be offered with BI

Stacked vs. Non-Stacked UM

Stacked UM may allow available UM limits to be combined based on the number of vehicles or applicable policies, subject to Florida law and the contract. In contrast, non-stacked UM generally provides narrower portability or aggregation and is often less expensive. Rejecting UM should be a deliberate decision, not merely a way to reduce the quote.

Collision Coverage

Collision coverage generally pays for direct physical damage to the insured vehicle caused by a collision with another vehicle or object, a rollover, a single-vehicle crash or certain hit-and-run damage.

For example, a driver who backs into a concrete post and causes $4,800 in covered damage may receive $3,800 under collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible, subject to the policy and adjustment.

Comprehensive Coverage

Comprehensive coverage, sometimes called other than collision coverage, generally addresses covered direct damage from theft, vandalism, flood, hail, fire, falling objects, wind-driven debris, animal contact and glass damage.

As a result, comprehensive coverage may respond when a vehicle is damaged by rising water, storm surge, a falling tree, roof debris, wind-blown objects or hail. Nevertheless, it should not be treated as a replacement for health insurance, PIP, Bodily Injury Liability or UM.

Rental Reimbursement

Rental reimbursement can help pay for temporary transportation while a covered vehicle is being repaired after a covered loss. Typically, it includes a daily maximum, total maximum, coverage-trigger requirements and time limitations.

Roadside Assistance

Roadside assistance may include towing, a battery jump-start, flat-tire service, lockout service, fuel delivery and extrication. Service areas, mileage limits and reimbursement rules vary.

Gap or Loan/Lease Payoff Coverage

Auto insurance normally values a totaled vehicle based on its covered actual cash value, not the remaining loan balance.

Potential Loan Gap After a Total Loss

Loan balance

$31,500

Vehicle actual cash value

$26,000

Collision deductible

$1,000

Potential settlement before other adjustments

$25,000

Potential remaining loan exposure

$6,500

Gap or loan/lease payoff may address part or all of an eligible difference, subject to limits and exclusions.

Custom Equipment and OEM Parts

Standard policies may limit coverage for aftermarket wheels, custom audio systems, lift kits, vehicle wraps, performance modifications, accessibility equipment and business equipment. However, age alone does not determine the premium.

Insurance-Based Credit Information

Florida insurers may use approved insurance-related credit information when rating eligible policies, subject to applicable law and insurer rules.

Vehicle Type

Insurers consider purchase price, repair cost, theft rate, safety record, horsepower, body type, battery cost, sensor calibration, parts availability and vehicle age. Contrary to a common myth, vehicle color is not ordinarily a rating factor.

Advanced Vehicle Technology

Modern bumpers, mirrors and windshields may contain cameras, radar sensors, parking sensors, lane-assistance equipment and blind-spot monitoring. Consequently, an independent agent can compare premium, liability limits, UM options, deductibles, rental limits, roadside coverage, exclusions, payment plans and eligibility.

Bundle Home and Auto Insurance

A multi-policy discount may be available when auto insurance is combined with homeowners, condo, renters, landlord or umbrella insurance. Before enrolling, ask whether the program can increase the premium, only provides discounts, collects phone-based data or requires every driver to participate.

Increase Deductibles Carefully

If raising a deductible saves $140 per year but increases claim exposure by $500, it takes more than three claim-free years to offset the difference.

Review Coverage Before Removing It

Before dropping collision or comprehensive, compare the vehicle’s value, annual premium, deductible, replacement affordability, flood exposure, theft risk and the household’s dependence on the vehicle.

Review Annual Mileage

Drivers who now work remotely or commute less should provide updated mileage information.

Pay in Full When Practical

Some insurers offer a paid-in-full discount or eliminate installment fees. What auto insurance is legally required in Florida?

Most owners registering an applicable four-wheel vehicle must carry at least $10,000 in Personal Injury Protection and $10,000 in Property Damage Liability. Additional liability coverage may be required after certain accidents, convictions or violations.

</details>

<details>

2. Is Florida still a no-fault state?

Yes. Florida remains a no-fault state for PIP purposes. Eligible injured people generally first use applicable PIP benefits without first establishing fault. However, fault still matters for property damage, liability claims and lawsuits.

</details>

<details>

3. What does PIP cover in Florida?

PIP generally pays 80% of qualifying necessary and reasonable medical expenses and 60% of qualifying lost income, subject to the policy, statutory conditions and available limits.

</details>

<details>

4. What is Florida’s 14-day PIP rule?

Initial medical services and care generally must be received within 14 days after the accident for PIP medical benefits to apply.

</details>

<details>

5. Is Bodily Injury Liability required in Florida?

It is not universally required merely to register every private passenger vehicle. Nevertheless, it may be required under Florida’s Financial Responsibility Law after certain accidents or violations, and by a lender, lessor, umbrella insurer or FR-44 filing.

</details>

<details>

6. What does full coverage mean in Florida?

Full coverage is an informal phrase, not a standardized contract. It commonly means liability, collision and comprehensive. It does not necessarily include UM, rental reimbursement, roadside assistance, gap coverage or high liability limits.

</details>

<details>

7. Does Florida auto insurance cover hurricane damage?

Comprehensive coverage generally addresses covered vehicle damage caused by flooding, wind, falling objects and storm debris, subject to the deductible and policy terms.

</details>

<details>

8. Does car insurance cover a flooded vehicle?

Comprehensive generally covers eligible direct vehicle damage caused by flooding, subject to the deductible and policy terms.

</details>

<details>

9. Does homeowners insurance cover my car during a hurricane?

Homeowners insurance generally does not insure the automobile itself. Instead, vehicle damage should be reviewed under the auto policy, usually comprehensive for flood or falling-object losses.

</details>

<details>

10. Should I buy Uninsured Motorist coverage in Florida?

UM is optional, but it can provide important bodily injury protection when an at-fault driver has no BI coverage, insufficient limits or leaves the scene.

</details>

<details>

11. Does insurance follow the vehicle or the driver?

The answer depends on the coverage, vehicle, driver, household, permission and policy language. Auto insurance often begins with the insured vehicle, but not every driver or use is automatically covered.

</details>

<details>

12. Can I use electronic proof of insurance in Florida?

Yes. Florida permits acceptable electronic proof of auto insurance. Keep an accessible copy in the insurer’s application, digital wallet or saved documents.

</details>

<details>

13. What happens if my Florida auto insurance lapses?

A lapse can lead to registration or driver-license suspension, reinstatement fees, loss of discounts and higher future premiums.

</details>

<details>

14. How much does Florida auto insurance cost?

Published estimates vary substantially by methodology. A personalized quote is more useful than a statewide average because premiums depend on the insurer, driver, vehicle, ZIP code, limits, deductibles and history.

</details>

<details>

15. Why did my premium increase without a claim?

Rates can change because of repair costs, medical costs, carrier rate changes, ZIP-code experience, vehicle changes, discounts, insurance-based credit information, mileage, household drivers and broader claim trends.

</details>

<details>

16. Should I increase my deductible to save money?

A higher deductible may lower the premium. Therefore, select an amount you could comfortably pay immediately after a loss and compare the annual savings with the increased exposure.

</details>

<details>

17. Do leased vehicles need full coverage?

Leasing companies typically require collision and comprehensive, specified deductibles and continuous insurance. They may also require higher liability limits.

</details>

<details>

18. Can I cancel collision after paying off my car?

You may generally remove collision after the lender releases its interest. Before doing so, consider the vehicle’s value and whether you could afford to repair or replace it after an accident.

</details>

<details>

19. Can I bundle Florida home and auto insurance?

Many insurers offer multi-policy discounts. Compare the total household premium, limits, deductibles and carrier terms rather than assuming every bundle is automatically less expensive.

</details>

<details>

20. How often should I review my auto policy?

Review it at least annually and whenever you add a driver or vehicle, move, change jobs, begin delivery or rideshare work, pay off a loan, add an umbrella or experience a major premium change.

</details>

For additional definitions and answers, visit the Florida insurance glossary and FAQ page.

Why Choose an Independent Florida Auto Insurance Agent?

Unlike a direct insurer, an independent insurance agent can compare multiple companies.
