Crazy as it may seem, the holidays are fast approaching. Thanksgiving is mere two weeks away! Some of us have the pleasure of hosting the fun and festivities with family and friends in our own homes. While you are busy working on your menus and place settings, we thought we'd give you a few Thanksgiving safety tips to add to your preparation lists. Nothing dampens the holiday spirit like an unfortunate situation.

Here are some Thanksgiving safety tips for preparing your home and guests for the best and safest results:

  • Pick up trash and food scraps that fall to the floor, and wipe up spills promptly to prevent slipping accidents.

  • Secure throw rugs using sticky padding or double-sided carpet tape.

  • Make sure electrical cords are out of the way or taped down.

  • Add night lights to your guest bedroom, bathroom and hallways.

  • Use stick-on non-slip strips in showers and bathtubs, plus consider adding a grab bar.

  • Adjust the thermostat lower on your hot water heater if you have the water too hot. What's comfortable to you may scald young children visiting your bathtub.

  • Make sure your overnight guests are aware if you set your home alarm when going to bed. That will prevent an alarm "surprise" when someone opens the window for a breath of fresh air!

  • Clean your garage to make sure that anything dangerous or harmful is out of the way.

  • Be alert for potential collisions with others, especially at doorways and around the stove.

  • If you have an aggressive pet, be sure to take precautions and let your guests know the boundaries. Save the biting for the turkey!

According to the United States Fire Administration, each year on Thanksgiving Day there are more than 4,000 fires in homes across the country. The number of cooking fires that occur on Thanksgiving is more than double the number of fires that occurs on an average day. Follow critical fire safety tips to avoid this type of problem.

It’s a lot of work preparing for Thanksgiving, but it will pay off. With care and attention, you can stay safe and injury-free, and able to enjoy the blessings of a special meal with your loved ones. Happy Thanksgiving everybody!
