Florida Home Insurance Rates Are Finally Showing Signs of Improvement
For some Florida homeowners, rates are going down soon. The Florida Office of Insurance Regulation (OIR) announced on September 22, 2026 that it approved rate decreases from four homeowners insurance companies affecting more than 62,000 policies. OIR also reports that dozens of insurers have filed for rate decreases or no increases since January 2024.
That does not mean every Florida homeowner’s premium will decrease. Your individual rate still depends on your insurance company, home, location, coverage, deductibles, discounts, claims history and other rating factors.

Florida regulators just approved several significant rate decreases
The latest announcement from the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation provides another encouraging data point for Florida’s property insurance market.
Insurance Commissioner Mike Yaworsky announced approval of homeowners insurance rate decreases for four companies:
- One Alliance North America Insurance Company: 10.4% decrease affecting 17,148 policies
- Safe Harbor Insurance Company: 4.1% decrease affecting 10,501 policies
- Unique Insurance Company: 3.2% decrease affecting 8,266 policies
- Vyrd Insurance Company: 10.4% decrease affecting 26,751 policies
According to OIR, these approved changes will take effect at renewal for affected policyholders.
The bigger story may be what is happening beyond these four companies. OIR reports that since January 2024, 48 insurance companies have filed for a rate decrease and 53 have requested no rate change or a 0% increase.
Why this matters for Florida homeowners
For several years, Florida homeowners became accustomed to substantial insurance increases at renewal. The latest rate filings suggest that the direction of the market may be changing.
OIR reported that the 30-day average requested homeowners insurance rate change is currently -4.8%. One year ago, it was -1.1%. Five years ago, it was +5.2%.
For comparison, OIR reports that the average approved homeowners rate change in July 2022 was +15.33%.
That is a meaningful shift in the statewide trend, although it should not be interpreted as a promise that every homeowner will receive a lower renewal premium.
A statewide rate decrease does not mean your premium automatically goes down
Insurance rates and individual insurance premiums are related, but they are not the same thing.
A rate is part of the pricing structure an insurance company uses. Your premium is the actual amount you pay after the insurer applies its rating factors to your specific property and coverage.
Your renewal premium may still change because of factors such as:
- Your home’s replacement cost
- Roof age and type
- Wind mitigation features
- Location and catastrophe exposure
- Coverage limits
- Deductible selections
- Available discounts
- Claims history
- Changes to the insurer’s rating methodology
This is why the number that matters most to an individual homeowner is still the renewal offer for their specific property.
Florida homeowners may have more reason to shop their insurance again
As more insurers adjust rates and compete for Florida homeowners, comparing coverage at renewal may become increasingly useful.
During the hardest years of Florida’s insurance market, some homeowners had relatively few viable alternatives. Improving market conditions can create additional opportunities to compare insurers, coverage options and pricing.
If your policy has renewed with the same company for several years, it may be worth seeing what the current market offers rather than assuming your existing policy remains the most cost-efficient option available to you.

Florida’s insurance market is improving, but the story is not finished
The recent rate filings are encouraging, but Florida remains one of the country’s most complicated property insurance markets.
Hurricane exposure, reinsurance costs, construction costs, roof characteristics, replacement values and individual property risk can continue to affect premiums even when an insurance company’s overall rate level decreases.
OIR also says additional rate decrease requests are currently under review. Commissioner Yaworsky stated that the agency expects additional rate-cut announcements as Florida moves toward 2027.
That makes this a trend worth watching rather than a single announcement.
What should you do when your homeowners insurance renewal arrives?
Review the entire renewal rather than looking only at the premium.
- Compare the new premium with last year’s premium.
- Review your dwelling and other coverage limits. Make sure you understand what changed.
- Check your hurricane and other-perils deductibles.
- Review discounts and mitigation credits.
- Compare alternatives when appropriate. Different insurers can evaluate the same Florida property differently.
- Compare coverage as well as price. A lower premium is not necessarily a better option if important coverage differs.
A licensed Florida insurance agent can help explain the differences between available policies and how those differences may affect your particular home.
What does this mean for Central Florida homeowners?
Statewide insurance trends can affect Central Florida, but individual pricing remains property-specific.
Homes in Orlando and surrounding communities can have significantly different insurance options based on construction, age, roof characteristics, wind mitigation features, location and other underwriting factors.

Frequently Asked Questions About Florida Home Insurance Rates
Are homeowners insurance rates actually decreasing in Florida?
Some are. The Florida Office of Insurance Regulation announced in September 2026 that it had approved rate decreases for four insurers affecting more than 62,000 policies. OIR also reports that numerous additional insurers have filed for decreases or no rate increase.
Will my Florida homeowners insurance premium decrease?
Not necessarily. An insurer’s overall rate change does not determine every policyholder’s premium. Your cost depends on the insurer, property characteristics, coverage limits, deductibles, discounts, claims history and other rating factors.
When will approved insurance rate decreases take effect?
The four decreases announced by OIR on September 22, 2026 are expected to apply to affected policies at renewal. The timing for an individual homeowner depends on the policy’s renewal date and the insurer’s approved filing.
Which Florida insurance companies recently received rate decreases?
OIR identified One Alliance North America Insurance Company, Safe Harbor Insurance Company, Unique Insurance Company and Vyrd Insurance Company in its September 2026 announcement.
Does a 10% insurance rate decrease mean my premium will drop 10%?
No. A company’s approved overall rate decrease does not necessarily translate into the same percentage change for every policy. Individual premiums can vary based on property characteristics, coverage, deductibles, discounts and other rating factors.
Should I shop my homeowners insurance when I receive my renewal?
It can be useful to compare available options when your renewal arrives, particularly as Florida insurers change rates and underwriting strategies. Compare coverage terms, deductibles and limits along with premium.
Can wind mitigation lower Florida home insurance premiums?
Qualifying wind mitigation features can affect available insurance credits. The amount depends on the home’s documented features and the insurer’s rating plan. A current wind mitigation inspection may help insurers identify qualifying features.
Is Florida’s homeowners insurance market getting better?
Recent OIR data show improving rate trends, including more filings for decreases and zero increases. However, Florida remains exposed to hurricanes, reinsurance costs and other factors that can affect insurance pricing. Market conditions can also vary considerably by insurer and property.
The takeaway for Florida homeowners
Florida homeowners have spent years hearing about insurance increases. The latest numbers from state regulators show a different trend beginning to emerge.
More insurers are requesting rate decreases or no increases, and recently approved decreases will affect tens of thousands of policies. That does not mean Florida’s insurance affordability problems have disappeared, nor does it mean every renewal will be cheaper.
It does mean homeowners may have more reason to pay attention to the market.
Your renewal premium is specific to your home. The statewide trend tells us where the market is moving, but comparing your actual options tells you what is available for you.
